Funding: Operational Programme Regional Development 2007-2013
Value: BGN 5,195,970.34
Period of Implementation: August 2013 – September 2014

Built in 1913, the Central Mineral Baths is one of the symbols of Sofia and a monument of culture of national significance. Due to its bad state, it has been closed for almost 30 years. Within the project, the building was reconstructed, restored and adapted, so that it can perform the functions of a museum of Sofia history. Despite the change of its purpose, the exterior and the main scheme of the internal spaces have been preserved and restored in their authentic appearance. The undeveloped parts of the two inner courtyards were added within the scope of the museum in order to extend the exhibition space.

The Museum of History of Sofia has a total area of 7,900 sq m and is situated on four levels which house exhibition spaces, restoration ateliers, repositories, administrative offices, halls with representative functions, tourist information center and coffee shop. Over 120,000 exhibits related to different periods of the history of Bulgaria’s capital will be exposed in the museum. Currently, they are stored in the collections of other museums, as the Museum of Sofia had its own building only for three years in its 85-year history.

Implemented Activities: Repair of roof structures, restoration of facades and ornamental elements, mounting of new exterior lighting, repair of street bed and laying new sidewalk pavement. Restoring of original floors and metal railings of staircases, installation of lifts and new interior lighting, replacement of water and sewage pipes and electrical installations, building of geothermal station and heat distribution unit, etc.
